My ass has made the big time

It’s March, and you know what that means???

Why, yes, it’s time for me to take a walk down memory lane, specifically to take a stroll down Colonoscopy Boulevard.

And in honor of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, I have the pleasure of seeing my post published on the front page of BlogHer! Good thing I’m not shy about sharing!

Please stop by, and if you have a parent or spouse who has been putting off getting a colonoscopy, send ’em over there and hopefully I’ll be able to convince them to get it done now.

Get your colonoscopy in March and start spring with a clean-as-a-whistle colon!

(I just don’t understand why I’m not writing slogans for a living).

In other news, my son is, well, odd.

Want proof? Lately he has been sleeping with a new lovey; two, to be specific.

His loveys are oval and brown and fit nicely into his hands as he takes the trip to slumberland. They smell like dirt.

Yes, he has been sleeping with two russet potatoes. One is Ron, the other is Roy. Don’t ask me which is which.

As odd as this is, it just can’t be the weirdest lovey ever, so please leave me a comment and tell me: What is the strangest thing your child has adopted as a nighttime lovey?

Valentine’s that do more than warm a heart

I’ve gotten to be a bit “bah humbug” about Valentine’s Day over the years. How did a holiday that is presumably about the sweetness of love become so over-commercialized and junk-filled?

This year, I decided to take back Valentine’s Day and do something to share our love with some people who could really use it. So, we decided to make Valentine Day’s cards for some of the Veterans in our local VA Hospital. Using the free and willing help of the kids in our homeschool coop, we sat down one Wednesday afternoon and got to work.

With a bunch of plain white cards, heart stamps and stickers, the kids sat down and made cards for the Vets. Even us moms got involved, writing messages like “Thank your for your service” and “Happy Valentine’s Day” on our own creations.

Last week, we took our stack of Valentine card’s to the massive complex that is the VA Hospital in our area. We delivered our cards to the Volunteer Services coordinator who will have them put on dinner trays on Valentine’s Day.

Our Valentine’s have already been delivered, but I’ve since learned of Valentines for Veterans, a project to boost the morale of Veterans during National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans Week that runs from February 7-13.

In addition, Bloganthropy saw my Tweets about our coop project and wrote to tell me of donations the website Dollar Days is making to Sew Much Comfort, an adaptive clothing company for wounded soldiers, in honor of National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans Week. For every blogger who signs their form by February 4th and then publishes a post about their Valentines for Veterans participation by the 12th, Dollar Days will donate $50 in clothing to Sew Much Comfort.

In addition, Dollar Days will donate an additional $50 in clothing for any blog post that gets at least ten comments. So, please leave a comment and help Sew Much Comfort get more items to help Veterans.

For all the details on how you can help Sew Much Comfort provide free adaptive clothing to service members in need by making Valentine’s for Vets, please see Bloganthropy. Many thanks to Dollar Days for donating to such a great organization.

And please don’t forget to comment here—I need ten of you (and thanks to you too!).

It’s "Thank Your First Commenter Day"! Pass the wine!

Many thanks to Neil for coming up with this way of spreading a little thanksgiving before the actual holiday. His challenge? Find the first person who ever commented on your blog and thank them.

My very first commenter to that post I wrote back in October of 2006 is the barely known blogger (heh) who goes by Mom 101. In response to a post in which I recounted how a drunk boy told me I was “practical”, she wrote:

Okay that is like the single worst thing I think any guy could ever say to a drunk woman in the bar. I mean, “wanna do it in my trailer?” would probably be better than that!

For what it’s worth, practical is not the first thing I think of when I think of you. I think of you in that bleeding heart halloween costume in 92 (eek) and how I thought to myself, now THERE’S someone I could be friends with!

Thank you for this Liz.

I’d also like to send a big thank you to the first person I don’t know outside of blogland who commented on my site: Daisy from Compost Happens who wrote this on my second post titled “Homeschooling Hiccups“. She wrote:

The best way to raise a reader is to read. Keep reading to her, showing her that books are wonderful and fun and contain stories that rock. When she’s developmentally ready, she’ll go for the phonics lessons.

Two posts in, and I was already worrying about my abilities to homeschool. Sounds about right. And, heck, guess what! She was spot on with her advice.

To everyone who has ever visited this blog, who has taken the time to comment, or email, or send me a Tweet, thank you, thank you, thank you. You warm my heart.
